What is Family Communication

Family interactions demonstrate the concepts of family communication. These interactions illustrate many of the concepts and theories presented in the textbook. As students of Family Communication, we need only look at the framework of family communication to see examples of the issues we are studying. Your assignment is to select a family (real or fictional) and follow their framework and development as you learn about theories and communication concepts.

The purpose of this assignment is to note family communications patterns in a family you have chosen and add a brief journal entry to explain what you have observed. The family you select to observe may be any that you have the ability to observe. The media offers many sources for family situations to observe. Comic sit-coms or dramatic soap operas have an abundance of family communication issues. Feature films as well have plots with elaborate communication frameworks to develop. You may use your own family (anonymity will be respected).

Try to make a brief journal entry each week. The Journal entries should be numbered rather than dated. It may work out that as we read and learn from the text book and classes, you will have something new to add regularly. Explain what you observe and show how this action is associated with the concept(s) we are learning.
