What did this redefined relationship seek to accomplish? How did Citizens Plus respond to this proposal?

For the primary source essay assignment, students will write a short argumentative essay based on a close reading of two short primary sources: the Government of Canadas Statement of the Government of Canada, 1969 (otherwise known as the White Paper), and The Indian Chiefs of Albertas Citizens Plus of 1970. During the Second World War, Indigenous and Canadian wartime experiences had raised significant questions as to the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian state. These questions further intensified during the 1960s as Canada underwent a period of sweeping social change. Both the White Paper of 1969 and Citizens Plus of 1970 sought to provide answers to these pressing questions as Canada entered its new multicultural age. Historically, what was the relationship between Indigenous peoples in Canada and the Canadian state? How did the Canadian government, through the White Paper, seek to redefine this relationship? What did this redefined relationship seek to accomplish? How did Citizens Plus respond to this proposal? What sort of relationship with the Canadian state did the Citizens Plus seek instead? What did this counterproposal entail?
Your paper should be approximately 1000 words or 4 pages in length (12pt Times New Roman font) with 1 inch margins, double-spaced, and paginated. The paper must be fully footnoted using Chicago Style citation. Grammar and spelling will be evaluated when determining the quality of this paper. Your paper must also contain a clear thesis or argument. We will discuss how to construct a strong thesis statement in class. Feel free to run your thesis past me before the papers due date. You should draw the majority of your evidence from the White Paper and Citizens Plus themselves. While nothing prevents you from using secondary materials, you can fully complete this assignment without them. Remember that quotations do not explain themselves and do not substitute for analysis. Your interpretation of the evidence is what matters here. Please submit papers electronically through Blackboard as PDF files. Always keep a final copy of work for your records.
