The poems “Daddy” by Sylvia Plath and “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke are similar in the fathers’ negative and oppressive behavior; however, in “Daddy,” the father is portrayed as domineering and controlling whereas in “My Papa’s Waltz,” the father is a more ambiguous figure, portraying both positive intentions and unintentional harm.
