two pages each question
1) We often consider the Civil Rights movement having begun in the 1950s and 1960s but in this first half of the class we see some of the earlier origins of the Civil Rights movement. Considering documents like Lincolns inaugural address, the selection by Douglass (588) and the petition to Andrew Johnson (576), as well as the general information from the textbook how can we see the Civil Rights movement starting in the aftermath of the Civil War? What causes did African Americans and their allies advocate for? What other groups advocated for their own rights? What successes and failures did they see during the second half of the 19th Century?
2) Do you believe the 1920’s deserved its designation as the “Roaring 20’s”? Why or why not? What evidence do we see in our texts and in the textbook that support your claim? Make sure to incorporate at least 2-3 documents we’ve read in the class into your answer.
