Assessment Four: Essay (1400 words, 35%)

For this essay, select a developing country in Asia, Africa or South America.
With reference to your selected country, your task is to present a critical analysis that responds to ONE of the following questions:

Assess the consequences of trade liberalisation for your selected country.
(You may want to consider: how, when, and why the country liberalised? Focus your analysis of the consequences for one sector that was liberalised – for e.g., agriculture, or garments, or electronics)

OR

Examine the role of China in the economy of your selected country.
(You may want to consider: how, when, and why did China enter that country? Focus your analysis on a particular sector in which China was involved – for e.g., road construction, railways, mining, or manufacturing)

OR

Evaluate the climate change adaptation plan of your selected country.
(You may want to consider focussing on one key climate challenge faced by the country – for e.g., desertification, rising sea levels, pollution, or extreme weather events. Critically discuss the actions undertaken by the country to mitigate or adapt to these challenges.)

OR

Assess the short-term and long-term consequences of international migration in your selected country.
(You may want to consider focussing on a particular type of migration – for e.g. professional migrants, or labour migrants, and examine the consequences for the migrants, their families, communities and the economy of their country)

OR

Evaluate the progress your selected country has made towards achievement of ONE of the Sustainable Development Goals
(You may want to consider: what are the barriers and challenges faced by the country in achieving this SDG? What actions would be required for the achievement of the SDG?)

Assessment Four (Essay) will be marked on the following criteria:
Quality of research (demonstrate that you have drawn on and successfully used academic sources such as peer reviewed journals or academic books)
Content and Argument (clear articulation of an argument, with convincing supporting evidence)
Presentation and organisation(structure, coherence, grammar, spelling)
